How Can We Help?

What are carers expected to do?

This guidance explains what the carer's responsibilities are during a booking. (Early Years and Adult Care Settings)
While responsibilities may vary slightly depending on the setting, temporary carers are generally expected to undertake the following duties.

1. Core Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, compassionate care tailored to the individual needs of children or adults, while also supporting daily routines, in a safe, secure, and stimulating environment.
  • Follow the setting’s key policies and procedures, with particular attention to safeguarding, equality and inclusion, behaviour or care management, health and safety, and confidentiality.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised environment within the areas they are working.
  • Ensure equipment, resources, and materials are used appropriately, stored correctly, and left in a safe condition after use.
  • Clean obvious spillages or marks in working areas (such as floors, doors, or surfaces) as they occur.
  • Ensure rooms, corridors, and shared spaces used during the shift are left tidy at the end of the day, including clearing cups, plates, clothing, or care items.
  • Support light tidying in service-user areas only (for example, wiping sinks or organising personal items), and only when no children or adults are present.
  • Empty bins within the working area, including nappy or hygiene bins, in line with the setting’s policies.
  • Assist with tidying outdoor areas used during the shift, ensuring they are safe and clear of obvious hazards such as debris, leaves, or spillages.
  • Carry out personal care tasks, such as nappy changes or continence support, strictly in accordance with the setting’s policies, training, and care plans, where applicable to the role.

2. Duties Not Included in the Role

The following tasks do not form part of the carer’s responsibilities, unless explicitly agreed in advance:
  • General or deep cleaning duties, including cleaning adult toilets, kitchens, or communal facilities.
  • Administer formal documentation, assessments, observations, care plans, or learning records.
  • Kitchen duties or food preparation, unless the carer is specifically booked into a role where this is required and appropriately trained.
